Battle of the Books

Dear Fourth and Fifth Grade Parents,

Our school is once again offering a club for 4th and 5th graders.  The Battle of the Books Literacy Club is designed to encourage:

  • Reading quality literature.
  • Reading over the summer months and in their leisure time during the school year (some students got a jump on reading over the summer).
  • Reading for information as well as pleasure.

Fourth and fifth grade students of all reading levels are invited to participate.  Students will be asked to read at least seven titles from the attached book list.  Many of the books are award-winning pieces of literature.  All of the books are available for check out from the Aurora Public Library System, Cherry Creek School District media, as well as CCSD Overdrive (audio and eBooks).  We will also have books available here at Summit.

Students will participate in 16 book studies/book club sessions.  The meeting schedule is attached.  During the book studies, participating students will work collaboratively to discuss the books and respond to questions about plot, characters, setting and theme.  Time to read the books will also be provided.  Regular attendance at the Battle of the Book Club meetings is expected.  Our school battle will be held on Thursday, January 26th at 3:45 p.m. in the Summit library (more details forthcoming). The winning team will go on to the district battle, which will take place during the first two weeks in February (date TBD).

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Erin Fossen
